Intention – The Magical Magnet

One day I complained to my friend Pat that people think I’m too serious. The allegation mystified me, because I’m fun loving and I especially enjoy a good laugh.

“Hmmm,” Pat said, “I know what you mean. You’re not so much serious as intentional.”

I couldn’t have asked for a more insightful response. It is true – I am intentional. And you know what? I’m pretty darn serious about my intentions! As far as I’m concerned, that is the only way to be if I want to stay in the driver’s seat of my own life. Once I decide to do something … I do it.

I have had a lot of training to support me. When I was just eleven years old, I decided to study Psychology. I undervalued my Psychology degrees once I had them (of course!) Very recently, like in the last few years, it finally dawned on me that what I was taking for “common sense” and “obvious” was neither to most other people – I was informed with layers of insight and knowledge that came directly out of studying Psychology for many years. I had been taking my Psychology training for granted when all the time it was a solidly built road that was fully supporting my life and career. In Psychology I learned to appreciate the power and vicissitudes of the unconscious mind and the effect of personality and emotions on our functioning. I used these insights to help myself in my own life, and to help my clients in theirs.

Whilst I was completing my Psychology Masters Degree, I also went to London to complete my training as an Alexander Technique teacher. The Alexander Technique’s tag line is “constructive conscious control.” The Alexander Technique gets mistaken for bodywork because it is a kinesthetic modality, with hands-on guidance – and feels GREAT! However, it is actually a technique about thinking, and becoming consciously accountable of our supreme gift of being human – our consciousness. When you train as an AT teacher, you spend 3 years learning, in minute detail, how to stop the patterns that interfere with the actualization of conscious intention.

As if all that wasn’t enough, 2 more extensive subjects, Energy Healing and Crystal Healing claimed (kidnapped?) my attention. These are 2 very demanding paths of inquiry, requiring the capacity to fulfill a healing intention in the space of 60 minutes. No lesser standard will suffice, if you want to set a professional standard and demonstrate that your endeavor can overcome the stigma of being considered “fringe” and “unscientific.”

This has been pretty powerful stuff, and intention has proven itself to be a magical magnet – a positive, organizing force for both my life and career, for which I am very thankful.
